Pochodzenie piosenki jest nieznane, ale po raz pierwszy została opublikowana w 1920 roku jako piosenka dla dorosłych. Dopiero w latach 1947-1948 Itsy Bitsy Spider po raz pierwszy pojawił się jako rymowanka dla przedszkolaków.
